Sonia Nadhamuni’s life is going well until her father loses his job and she’s pulled out of the private school she adores. Now in a public school, she feels out of place. Her classmates make her uncomfortable with their questions geared towards her name and looks. With an Indian father and Jewish mother, the kids focus is on who she is, what she is, and what religion she practices. Sonia tries to fit in with new friends and cheerleading tryouts, but this doesn’t mean she’s being true to herself. Meanwhile, at home, things are getting worse with her parents. Her mother, who works longer hours because of the father’s job loss, doesn’t like all the changes in Sonia’s social life and her unemployed father is going through emotional changes that will rock the family. I enjoyed all the elements of family, friendship, and diversity in this middle grade novel.
Victor’s parents either ignore or belittle him, and at school he’s bullied in the worst way by Bull. His caring grandmother is far away. He has no one. When circumstances become unbearable for him, he takes a bottle of his mother’s pills and wakes up in a hospital.
Bull, his tormentor, is cruel for a reason. He has his own bruises, being beaten by his grandfather, with a drunken mother who does nothing to support him. When he finds a gun he decides to defend himself. But instead of shooting his grandfather, he accidentally shoots himself. With people thinking it was a suicide attempt, rather than self-defense, he ends up in the same psychiatric hospital as Victor. They’re roommates!
It was an interesting relationship to have in a book. What goes on in the hospital between Victor and Bull, as well how they interact with the other patients, was fascinating. This novel made me teary-eyed, although the authentic teenage voices, areas of comic relief, and the love and hope the boys find in the hospital add lightness to this otherwise sad story. Kudos to K.M. Walton on this amazing debut.
The author took her aunt Syvia’s Nazi occupation story and turned it into this verse book. Reading about Syvia and how her family survived in a Polish ghetto during her childhood was heart-wrenching. I finished it days ago and I’m still thinking about it. YELLOW STAR is a fast read, but one that leaves a lasting impression.
LOLA AND THE BOY NEXT DOOR - Stephanie Perkins
Perkins has created another believable world and another to-die-for couple in her latest novel. I adored ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS and was thinking this would be similar, but LOLA features a different world with brand new characters, although Anna and St. Clair are featured in this book (I loved seeing them again). The characters are quirkier than the ones in ANNA, but I find that Perkins knows how to write quirky without going overboard or becoming unrealistic. For several hours I was involved with Lola, her boyfriend, the boy next door she still has feelings for, her two fathers, and the mother who makes a reappearance after almost fading out of her life. This novel has plenty of conflict, and my favorite part was the romance.

Thanks for sharing. I have too many books on my TBR list! I've had Lola and the Boy Next Door on my list for a while. The others sound like good reads as well.
My goodness such profound reads - I'm drawn to Cracked as the situation seems so hopeless and awful for Victor especially waking in hospital to find your bully is your roommate!
Thanks for the reviews and the info to these amazing reads!! Take care
x
Cracked sounds like an amazing story. I can see how it could reach out at the reader and grab, even tear, at their heart. Thanks for the synopsis.
Cracked is already on my to-read list, but now it looks like I've got a few more to add to the list. Thanks for the recommendations!
The premise of 'Cracked' sounds very interesting.
Thanks! Cracked is already on my list of books TBR but the rest of them are new to me and they all sound engaging.
You've been busy reading, Medeia! The Yellow Star sounds great for the ages of my two youngest. It's more difficult to find young middle grade books geared toward boys, so I always appreciate finding reviews. I'm reading one with my two youngest now called 'The Moon Coin'. We're only three or four chapters into it, but so far it's quite interesting.
Have a great week!
I have Cracked on the list of books that I need to check out. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
All those books look like great debuts. LOLA and CRACKED especially. Happy reading! :)
So many great book... I must grab Lola!
Strong recommendations, all of them.
I loved how you recommended these books, you made all of them sound tantalising. Thank you.
All of these sound great. The one that's already on my list is Cracked.
Ooh, these all look good! Now I just need more time in the day to read.
Yellow Star...it would turn me inside out and backwards, wouldn't it? Like the Book Thief? I love these books but they stay with me for so long that I can't read anything for awhile. I need to tackle over a vacation.
I'm reading Cracked now. I critiqued it way back in the beginning, and it was good then, but even better now! I loved it. I'll have to check out the others on your list. Thanks for sharing.
I've heard good things about all of these. I'm really interested in Yellow Star. Books in verse are so amazing.
I've heard amazing things about Cracked, and I adored Lola! Haven't heard of the other two, but they're going on my list. They sound amazing!
As always, you've been reading some interesting books.
Yellow Star sounds similar to a book I read called T4, that also took place during WWII and was written in verse.
I've been seeing Cracked in a lot of places around the blogosphere; another novel for the TBR list!
Those all sound good. I've already got two on my wishlist - I'll have to add the others now! :)
I thought the dating an older guy thing (hope that's not a spoiler--I think it's on the back of the book) was done particularly well in Lola.
These all sound wonderful, Medeia. Thanks for the reviews. Cracked sounds especially intriguing.
seems like your kinds of books, Medeia, I'm sure you enjoyed reading them.
My favorite part of any book is the romance! Sounds like you've been reading some great books - thanks for sharing them with us!
Lola's on the my list as is "Cracked". I won a query critique from K.M. Walton. She's so nice.
LOOOOOVE Lola! And Cricket. . . *sigh*
Been wanting to read Yellow Star, because I have heard so much about it. It sounds awesome! They all do. I have been reading picture books but I need to get back into my other stack. And I need to buy Yellow Star. Thanks Medeia! I hope the year has started out good for you. (((hugs)))
Wow, these are ones I need to add to my list. Those first two especially. Cracked sounds awe-ful ;) and mesmerizing and funny and touching. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the reviews. I've heard good things about Cracked. I've been meaning to read Lola and the Boy Next Door.
All these books sound great. Thanks.
I haven't read any of these novels yet, so it's great to read your reviews. Thanks, as always!
I hadn't heard of the debut author challenge, but what a great idea. The Whole Story of Half a Girl sounds like a book I'd especially like. Thanks for your thoughts on it.
Great books. Not really my type of books but I will recommend them :P
Thanks for the comments, everyone. I'm glad many of you found something you like.
It was nice to meet you in Miami! Yellow Star sounds like my kind of book.
I just finished LOLA AND THE BOY NEXT STORE. It was enchanting. I didn't want it to end. I need it to be a movie so I can watch it over and over.
Anna was such a fun read, and I'm sure Lola will be just as good!
