ROW80 and Why I'm Behind in My Goals

It's time for a ROW80 update. The current round of A Round of Words in 80 Days runs from October 3rd to December 22nd. My goal during this round of ROW80 is to a) revise one of my WIPs and b) write the outline for a shiny new idea.

Since my last update I revised four chapters of my WIP, so I have 23 out of 29 chapters revised. My favorite part of writing is revising because I get to see the sloppy first draft take shape and become a real novel.

I tweaked the outline for my shiny new idea, but not by much. I'll revisit it soon and tweak some more.
Tiki huts brought Carol Kilgore to mind.

I consider myself slightly behind in my writing goals. The main reason for this was being out of town during Thanksgiving week. First I visited the Florida Keys and right after that I went to Chicago for the ALAN conference. I went from one extreme to another, warm to cold. I enjoyed both trips immensely.

I was too chicken to completely step onto
the glass balcony of Skydeck.
I missed quite a bit of the ALAN conference. On day one I arrived late not only because of the timing of my plane ride, but because I played tourist before checking into the conference. I get a kick out of exploring big cities.

On day two I was on the panel Traversing the boundary between insider and outsider: Learning a language and culture and helping shape the future with J.L. Powers and Claudia G. Martinez. It was my first panel discussion. I was both excited and nervous, but it went well. I took numerous pictures of Chicago but failed to take conference pictures (which was bad of me since there were so many awesome authors, librarians, and teachers there). But when my camera isn't out, others are. Here is one picture of me at ALAN someone was nice enough to take.

The windy city...but it wasn't that windy during my stay.
The conference was only two days, so on day three I continued to play tourist. The trip was fantastic, but there were some places I didn't get to visit because of time constraints. The only snag on this trip was the shuttle ride to the airport. I almost missed my plane back to Florida because of a late driver and bad traffic. Fortunately, I made it in time for Thanksgiving.

And since it's the holiday season and I'm in a giving mood, don't miss out on an international book giveaway I posted last week. The details are here

I did quite a bit of holiday shopping last weekend, but I need to resume soon since I'm not a last minute person. I'm about half-way done, but I haven't tackled cards yet. How's your writing and shopping going along?

Excellent, my dear. Keep keeping us posted.

Revising four chapters is nothing to sniff at! That's good work.

I visited Chicago last year - my first trip to that city - and we enjoyed ourselves a great deal. I was surprised to see the handful of fairly large steel mills up and running! Industry is so important to a successful economy...I grew up in Pittsburgh of the 70's, so steel was a way of life. Then...the mills all closed down. It destroyed the area for many, many years. I hope Chicago keeps forging steel...

I've just started querying (halfheartedly)and I'm planning my new project, but Christmas shopping is definitely getting in the way. That's what I have to do today. I'm breaking my shopping into bite-sized portions. :D

Great job with almost reaching your goals. I think you're doing awesome!!!

Keep on revising! You're making progress and that's what's important.

Ohhh, lovely pics, and you got to visit my former home in Chicago! Yay! Great to hear your panel talk went so well. Here's to a future of many more! Good luck with those revisions!

I think you're doing great! I've made a ton of headway in my revisions as well, so I think both of us deserve a little retail therapy :) Good luck with the rest of your revising and your holiday shopping!

My favorite part is revising too! I'm in the middle of a revision now, and I'm loving every minute. Okay, well not every minute, but most minutes. :)

Sounds like you had a whale of a time! haven't been doing so well at writing, but I'm trying to catch up.

I'm envious. I love traveling. I'm just outside of Chicago myself, so that wouldn't be a big deal, but I'd love to visit Florida, especially with the weather we're having! And conferences are always fun, too; it sounds like you had a good time.

And nice job keeping up with things even with everything going. Four chapters is wonderful progress! Keep it up!

Great photos, thanks for sharing. I think you can be forgiven falling behind a little :-)

It's impossible to resist exploring new places - so much to see and experience! :)

Sounds like you've had fun. Umm, I haven't started anything to do with Christmas yet. I suppose I should get on that.

My shopping is finished with the exception of a gift card I have to pick up. My cards are all mailed as of last Monday. Now I can enjoy the weeks leading up to the holiday.

I'm so jealous that you went the the Florida Keys. I've never been there, but I want to go. It was an option for next summer, but I think we are going to go to St. Thomas instead.

Good luck with catching up with your writing goals.

It sounds like you have a pretty good balance despite running a little behind. But those trips were so worth it! Like you, I love revision. I'm about 3/4 done with my shopping. What bogs me down is the wrapping.

Hey...Tiki Huts!! Thanks for the plug :)

I'm not sure if I would have stepped onto the glass balcony either. Messes with my head - LOL

Those are wonderful distractions! I honeymooned in Key West...LOVE the Keys.

That's pretty good work you've done there! I hope you're enjoying all the traveling you have to do. Funny how you went from one extreme temperature to another :)

I can't believe you were at ALAN. Next time you're in Chicago, email me and I'll meet you for coffee and show you the good indie bookstores!

I'm glad you had such a good time on both of your trips! I loved your photos. How fun to visit two such different places! As for your writing, it sounds like you made great progress, even if you didn't get as far as you planned.

my fave part is that first round of revisions too... when you get to see what you've done and start to polish. Then by the fourth tine thru I don't want to see it again for months. lol

It sounds like you had a great trip! I couldn't step put on that glass balcony either. Yikes. November and December will probably derail the best of intentions. Keep chugging along and you'll get back on track. :) You've gotten a lot accomplished on revisions!

Ah, I see what you mean about feeling behind. But you know what? You were productive. You had 2 grand adventures (3 if you count being on a panel). I hope this week feels more productive :)

wow. I haven't even been in the Willis tower and I've lived here my whole life! The view looks amazingly scary. =)

It's amazing how the business of the holiday season gets in the way of our writing. I'm playing catch-up every day. It will probably be this way until the New Year.
I like your new background!

I'm taking a bit of a break from writing since NaNo just ended, but I plan to get back to it this weekend. As for shopping, I'm actually very ahead this year. I got lucky with being able to find gifts for people relatively easily. So I'm about 90% done I'd say and should be able to finish this weekend.

Sounds like you had a busy end of November! Glad you had time to play tourist! I went to Chicago for the first time in Feb this year on a business trip. It was right after Snowpocalypse, and I actually only got to spend one afternoon in the city. Hope to go visit again someday when it's not so cold. Haha.

I've given up with cards, except maybe to my aunt who still does snail mail. Everyone else gets email greetings. Yes, I'm lazy. :) I've been doing some writing (well, revision) but taking time to do some reading, too.

Sounds like your trip was busy and fun! That's great you did well with your panel discussion!!

Thanks for the comments and encouragement, everyone. :)

Ecards sound like a good idea.

I didn't know you were in the area, Christa. Sure thing.

I missed the mills, Nadja. Maybe next time I'll see them.
