MonsterFest 2011 - Demons

Demons have always scared me. Not that I believe they truly exist, but give me a horror book or movie that has demons in it and it’s guaranteed that I’ll have trouble sleeping. They’re invisible, wicked, and capable of possessing one’s body. I’m getting the heebie jeebies just writing this. It really began when someone gave me a copy of William Peter Blatty’s THE EXORCIST when I was in high school. I read the novel three times, disgusted and engrossed by the horror of demonic possession.

As an adult, I’m still fascinated by demons. Movies like PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, PARANORMAL ENTITY, and THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE give me my demonic fix. I turn away, pause the movie, shrink in my seat, and toss and turn at night worried that a demon will creep up on me. There’s a price to pay for two hours of spine-chilling entertainment. So far I've been safe. Objects don’t randomly move around me, the only time it’s cold is if the a/c is cranked up, and I haven’t been possessed yet (although people who’ve seen me having a bad day might disagree with this).

Since there's plenty of folklore about demons, this is a simple list of their attributes.
  • They're disembodied spirits.
  • They're malevolent.
  • They're attracted to people's negative energy and vulnerabilities such as grief, unconsciousness, and depression.
  • Numerous religions have a variety of demons and their own take on them.
  • They're strong and persistent, which is why their evil goes to the extent of possessing people's bodies.

I had two giveaways that ended last night.

Sara won a signed copy of Danielle Joseph's PURE RED.

Krispy won a signed copy of Michelle Hopkin's THE UNBECOMING OF MARA DYER.

Congratulations, ladies.

I'll be doing more giveaways in the future. I already reached my 2011 reading goal of 150 books, and I said I would do an international giveaway with three winners once I reached this goal. But I'm going to postpone that giveaway until late November since I upped my goal to 175, and also because I have some other giveaways lined up. This month and through early November I plan on giving away Robert Kroese's MERCURY RISES, Hilary Wagner's THE WHITE ASSASSIN, and Helen Landalf's FLYAWAY. So, be on the lookout for these books.

I hadn't known that much about demons before.

Interesting post!

Demons, I've a theory, arise in the brain as electrical impulses that exploit a single tendency and become an obsession or addiction.

Congratulations to your winners :-)

I love Demons, in an 'OMG they're so scary' kind of a way!

I can never quite convince myself that scary books are just books - that they're not real. There's always that possibility that they COULD happen. Haven't read much horror since reading King in high school - I'm such a wimp!

Demons - yes! I cannot watch anything to do with demons. Well, actually I can't watch horror films!

That's how I feel about zombies. Zombies give me the heebie jeebies!

Congratulations to the winners! And congratulations to you for reading to many books. I'm impressed!

I'm a coward and I like getting rest when I go to bed, so I avoid reading/watching that sort of stuff.

Congrats to the winners and to you, for meeting your reading goals!

I'm a HUGE scaredy-cat. Demons freak me out, but so do: vampires, werewolves, mummies, goblins... and the list goes on and on and on...

I'm sure you already know that the Quran acknowledges Jinns, demons of a sort. And I can say that they're certainl attracted to negative emotional energies.

Ooh, fun and scary blogfest for sure! I'll have to check it out!

And hey, I hang out with demons all day long--since they're in a lot of my books!

And yep, they scare me too! *shiver*

Interesting and informative post on Demons, thanks!

I'm with you. I like movies about demons, but I will definitely have nightmares. I'm working on a paranormal trilogy right now that borders on horror and I'm freaking myself out. ;)

Congratulations to the winners!

I saw The Exorcist as a kid. In general, I avoid horror movies. I'm a wimp.

I love demons. Not because they're evil mind you, I just love the potential in stories. :D They're so open to imagination and interpretation. And yes, though I like to write that stuff, if I'm watching a movie... I have a lot of trouble sleeping.

I'm fascinated with demons too! I attribute it to my love of getting the crap scared out of me and my lifelong Catholic school education. There's something particularly sinister about being terrorized by something that has never been human.

Medeia,
I'll have to pass on this one! I hate to be scared...and demons are really scary! Ha! (Just call me chicken little from now on....lol) Whoa...I'm already creeped out. ~ Nadja

Cool giveaway! I'm actually reading my copy of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer right now and really, really liking it. It's not too often that a book keeps me guessing. :)

Oh, so not a fan of horror. After seeing Pet Cemetary in hs, I must avoid!
There are many traditions of angels in religions as well...it'd be interesting to compare the differences. I bet their treatment would indicate a lot about worldview.

Not a huge fan of scary movies, but like ones like The Others more than the ones listed...ohhh can't think about any of that now, though...right before bed...

I was never into horror flicks or scary things. But actually demons figure a lot in fantasy books, so this is a great post to learn from!

You couldn't pay me to watch the Exorcist. Horror movies of any type scare the crap out of me. The only books I've read with demons that I like are Hex Hall and Demonglass by Rachel Hawkins.

DEZMOND said...

I'm not into demons and other evil creatures, but it's true that negative characters, monsters and dark tones have become dominant in YA books and other genre as well :(

Carol Riggs said...

Congrats to the winners of the books! Happy reading. I've read the EXORCIST but haven't seen the movie and have no desire to. I did, however, watch THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE. It's usually not my type of movie (horror) and demons especially creep me out. I think that PARANORMAL ACTIVITY movie is the one I saw--whatever it was, it was live footage and it was creepy. I creeped my daughter out just telling her about it!

Cynthia Chapman Willis said...

I'm too much of a wimp for that demonic stuff. No thanks!

Congratulations to the winners and to YOU for reaching your reading goal early. I am really impressed.

Michelle Fayard said...

What makes this more spine chilling is the element of truth, e.g. negative energy does tend to attract negative energy. True, it might not wear horns or its head spin around 180 degrees, but it can be just as destructive nonetheless.

Krispy said...

Good monster pick! I'm fascinated and scared of demons too! I always want to know what happens in scary movies but I can't really watch them. Too chicken. Haha. Books I can read, but sometimes that's worse because then it's really in my head!

Definitely checking out this blogfest. Haha.

Congrats on reaching your reading goal and THANK YOU for the book! Excited to read it! :D

Thanks for the creepiness and cool links ;)

I wanted to see that new Katie Holme's horror movie, but I was too scare to see it on my own. And I thought I'd look kind of stupid taking one of my daughter's stuffies with me. ;)

150 books? I am so impressed! I'm struggling just to finish my BooKrushers list of 11 books published in 2011! I have read several older books that weren't on my list along the way, but nowhere near that many, or even a tenth of that many.

Anyway, I think demons are much more terrifying than ghosts because they're so evil. Paranormal Activity really gave me the creeps!

Lydia Kang said...

Congrats to the winners!
I'm too chicken for horror. I leave that to the scare-avid.

Tamara Narayan said...

The Exorcist is the best horror film ever, IMHO. The book is excellent too. I've been looking for some recent horror films to see, since I haven't seen anything outstanding in the way of horror since The Ring. Sadly, I'll have to watch the scary stuff by myself as my husband is not a fan and my kids are way too young.

Demons freak me out. Big Time. But I'm a bit obsessed with movies of this sort, and I'm right there with you--I can't sleep afterward either. Just thinking about it is giving me the creeps!

You ought to read Sara Gran's COME CLOSER. An amazing contemporary American novela about demonic possession. I can't tell you just how good it is. I've rad it a few times. Chills me every time. Seriously, it's unlike anything out there.

I've been reading a lot of stuff on Jinns lately. Jinns are like these demons the Islamic community here in Britain believe in. My friend tells me they are real, though from what she says I have a hard time believing her.

I'm also having trouble going to bed after watching horror movie, that's why I prefer not to watch them :)

I love your post. The 'simple attributes' of demons listed by you were awesome. Sweet and simple. Demons have their personal charm :P

The Exorcist, The Omen. both great films about demons. There is something about the damned and the forsaken that sends a chill down your spine. Perhaps it's the fact that being creatures of pure evil, they have no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

This has been a fun blogfest! I can't wait for my go! :)

Ooh creepy. I can't watch certain scary movies. Scary books actually seem to freak me out MORE becaus they seem to be well, more real, I guess you could say. It's more believable.

Medeia, I couldn't handle Paranormal Activity. Had to shut it off the last minute, just before ... yeah. Creeped-me-out. And why is it that we're so drawn to what scares us the most? I remember reading The Exorcist as a kid and not being able to sleep for a really long time. Pet Sematary was another one of em. Great post!
